How to protect your pet on hot summer days

Summer brings not only longer days, but also warmer temperatures and stronger sunlight. We all want to spend as much time outdoors as possible with our four-legged companions—after all, they want to be our loyal partners on our summer adventures—but at the same time, we must consider both our own health and our pets’ health. Just as intense sunlight and high temperatures can affect our health, dogs are affected in the same way. While most of us can enjoy and adapt to the sun and warmth, such temperatures are often unbearable for pets. The hot summer is extremely stressful for dogs, causing discomfort and even serious health problems.

Therefore, we’ve compiled a list of tips for protecting your pets this summer. Because we know that providing them with the necessary protection and comfort, regardless of the season or circumstances, is our responsibility.

How to protect your pet on hot summer days

When temperatures rise and the sun beats down, it’s time to take steps to protect your pet from harm. With a little more love and care, we can ensure your beloved pet has a wonderful and healthy summer, rather than a summer filled with risks and discomfort.

How to Protect Your Pet in the Hot Summer

The most important thing is to protect your pet from the heat. Try to keep your pet indoors during the hottest part of the day (usually between 11 am and 4 pm). This is when the sun is strongest and most harmful to your pet. Even indoors, your pet must have access to fresh water at all times. During the hot summer months, if time permits, take them for walks during the cooler morning and evening hours. If your apartment doesn’t have air conditioning and you feel it’s too hot even indoors, we recommend getting your pet a cooling mat. These mats are filled with a special non-toxic gel that gradually cools the pet through contact with their body heat, creating a fresh, soft, and comfortable environment.

Another important aspect is preventing your pet from overheating. This condition, known as hyperthermia, is increasingly common during the hot summer months. The main cause is animals being in hot, poorly ventilated environments, leading to elevated body temperatures. Common causes include leaving dogs in poorly ventilated cars with windows closed, excessive sun exposure, or severe dehydration. To avoid such veterinary emergencies, always carry a water bowl or portable dog water bottle. Never leave your pet in your car, even for a few minutes; and never take them for walks during peak hours. Always ensure they have shade and plenty of water.

If the sun isn’t too strong and you plan to take your pet for a walk, hike, or even to the beach, be sure to protect them from sunburn. Short-haired dogs are generally more prone to sunburn, but other pets are also susceptible, especially around the eyes, ears, and nose. Fortunately, there are safe and effective pet-specific sunscreens and sprays available.

As mentioned earlier, adequate hydration is crucial in the hot summer. In fact

this is very important and needs to be emphasized repeatedly. Therefore, make sure your pet has access to fresh water at all times and pack water in their carrier before you go out. Of course, some pets don’t drink enough water. In this case, it’s recommended to offer a variety of wet food options or water-rich fruit and vegetable treats.

You should also pay close attention to your pet’s paws. Especially in summer, the health of the paw pads is critical. We often forget that dogs, like us, don’t wear shoes and are even more sensitive to temperature. Asphalt and concrete surfaces can get extremely hot, causing irritation and even burns to their paws. Therefore, avoid walking your dog on hot surfaces, especially during the day and afternoon. It’s best to choose unpaved paths or grassy areas, or consider buying your dog summer shoes to protect them from burns and other injuries.

You should also pay close attention to your dog’s paws. A dog’s fur not only provides warmth but also protection from heat. While we often trim our dogs’ fur as short as possible in the summer, this is not recommended, as it makes their skin more susceptible to sunburn. Instead, medium-length trims, regular brushing, and bathing ensure better airflow and remove dead hair.

We all agree that love and care are essential for the health and well-being of our four-legged friends. This summer, we want to not only enjoy the sunshine but also be responsible pet owners. Let’s give our beloved pets the love and care they need so they can enjoy a safe and worry-free summer!

Wishing you and your pet a wonderful summer filled with wonderful moments. safepet.ro is always committed to providing you with advice and support to ensure your pet receives the best care.
