Wet food or dry cat food. Advantages and disadvantages

Cats are among the most playful animals, and they’re always trying to steal our food. Even after a meal, they’ll still do it. We all know that feeding cats human food isn’t ideal, as not all human food is suitable for them. Furthermore, cats’ bodies can’t digest all food as efficiently as ours.

Therefore, pet lovers, especially cat owners, have conducted extensive research and testing to develop food suitable for cats—tailored to their age, health condition, and of course, their tastes and preferences. Cat food can be divided into two main categories: wet food and dry food.

Do you know what ingredients are in each type of cat food, and which is best for your cat?

The good news is that most cat foods, especially high-quality ones, whether wet or dry, are rich in nutrients. To choose the right food for your cat, you need to consider several factors, such as your cat’s weight, any existing health issues, your budget, and of course, consult your veterinarian.

What are the differences between wet and dry cat food?

1. Moisture Content

The moisture content of cat food is especially important for some cats that need to drink a lot of water. Therefore, moisture content is one of the main differences between the two types of cat food, and it depends on the amount of water in the food. As indicated on the packaging, wet cat food contains about 70% water, with the remainder being dry matter. Dry cat food contains about 10% water, with the remaining 90% being dry matter such as protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, and fats.

2. Manufacturing Process

The manufacturing process of cat food is closely related to its moisture content. Cat food with higher moisture content is usually made from fresh or frozen meat and fortified with vitamins, fats, gluten, and water. The heat treatment process of the cat food mixture can kill pathogens, thus ensuring the quality of the cat food. On the other hand, the production method of dry cat food involves mixing all the ingredients, such as meat, minerals, fats, and vitamins, and then compressing them as much as possible under high temperature and pressure.

3. Nutritional Components

Generally speaking, dry cat food has a higher carbohydrate content than wet cat food. Protein and fat content also vary depending on the type of cat food. Therefore, it is recommended that you carefully read the ingredient list and its percentages to choose the right cat food for your beloved cat.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Wet Cat Food

The biggest advantage of wet cat food is its high water content. This is especially ideal for cats with certain conditions (such as kidney disease, urinary tract infections, or diabetes), as these cats need to replenish their fluids.

Another advantage of wet cat food is its palatability. This is why some cats prefer wet cat food to dry cat food.

A major disadvantage of wet cat food is its higher price compared to dry cat food. A shorter shelf life is also a drawback. Once opened, canned or bagged wet food should be refrigerated if not fully consumed, for up to 24 hours. Uneaten wet food after opening poses a risk of contamination and gastrointestinal upset if not refrigerated.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Dry Cat Food

A major advantage of dry cat food is its price; it’s much cheaper than wet food. Storage is also a major advantage. Dry cat food doesn’t need refrigeration after opening, and don’t throw it away if your cat doesn’t finish it.

Another advantage of dry food is that it can also be used as a toy for cats, whether it’s a dedicated toy or an automatic feeder. These feeders can dispense food according to your set daily feeding amount or automatically replenish food after the cat has eaten.

Studies have shown that one disadvantage of dry food is its tendency to cause obesity in cats. Many cat owners don’t keep track of their cat’s daily food intake, and they often don’t have enough food on hand.

Another disadvantage of this food is that chewing dry food can be difficult for older cats or cats with dental problems. While it’s not entirely impossible to feed dry food, it’s not a wise choice.

To balance the advantages and disadvantages of different food types, you can mix wet and dry food, or establish a feeding schedule to feed wet and dry food separately at different times. If you choose this method, we recommend consulting a veterinarian to determine the optimal food mixing ratio for your cat’s needs.
